california missions test support

quizzing each other will help you study

this will help you remember the information

This week we will be  reviewing

the information from each background sheet.

Many of you have already started this process. You also already know a lot of questions that will be asked because we were practicing every time we played Mission Control!  Hooray!

Each evening, you need to take the review sheets given to you (organized by each background sheet) and get someone to quiz you on them. Maybe mom or dad or a sibling?

You can also Facetime/Zoom a friend and quiz each other.

Keep track of how you do. If you don't recall the answer, try this:

1. Mark the ones you missed.

2. Go over each of those and review the information. It is super helpful to say the information OUT LOUD. Even saying it loudly in a silly way like a chant or song will actually help your brain remember it.

Remember, our brains love things that are silly or funny.

3.  Then have someone quiz you again on the questions you just missed, and then practiced.

what will be on the missions test?

multiple choice

The first section will be multiple choice. It covers "a little of this and a little of that." Hint:  make sure you know, WHO came to California, why they came, the products of the missions, the first 2 missions, taxes, pirates, and diseases.

true or false

The next section is True or False. The tricky part of this is to remember that if PART of the statement is false, that means the entire statement is false. Hint: make sure you know about materials used for building missions, California banknotes, El Camino Real, Vizcaino, and unique facts about some of the missions.

fill in the blank

This section will have statements that have a blank you need to fill in. Choices will be listed in a box so you get to pick from there. Hint: It will mostly be places, names, numbers, and a few objects.

the mission layout

In the Missions Student Guide, there is a diagram of the typical layout of a mission. It labels the main parts. This diagram will be on the test. You should be able to identify the padre's rooms, the guest rooms, the church, the women's rooms, the men's rooms, and the workrooms.

the smaart answers

We have been practicing how to write SMAART answers for this whole unit. On the test, you will be asked to write some SMAART answers. And that includes the "T" part: take time for extra details. You are getting super good at this so I am 100% confident in you!!! The most common mistake is just rushing and forgetting the "T." Remember, rushing is not your friend!

In order to practice, we will be making "soda machines" to organize our thoughts. (You should remember doing this before.) The "soda machines" make it much easier to remember the details you want to include in your answer.

topics for the smaart questions

Make sure you are prepared to answer the following questions:

  • What was life like at the mission for the neophytes? Make sure you know about the horrible living conditions, the terrible diseases, and how they were punished.
  • Do you remember the "glowing cross" story? You need to know the details, including the REAL reason it glowed.
  • Make sure you know what daily life was like for the Native American men, women, and children. What chores did they have to do?
  • There were kind padres and unkind padres. Make sure you have examples of how Father Quintana was cruel and how Father Peyri was kind.
