Problem Solving is Important

problem solving

Once in awhile, the inevitable happens. You forget something important at school or at home.  It could be your Blue Folder, math homework, your binder etc.  In Room 10 one of the core values I teach is the importance of problem solving. Instead of just saying "Oh well!" and giving up, please see if you can come up with a strategy to solve the problem.

These ideas could solve your problem

try out some of these ideas

  • Rush back to school to get it in case Mrs. Eller is at school (She is often at school till 5:00 or sometimes later.)
  • Make sure you have the phone numbers and emails of a friend. You'd be surprised how helpful a friend can be!
  • Can't print out the cover sheet for math facts? Just make one yourself on a piece of paper or a post-it and have your mom/dad sign it. Or, have your mom/dad email Mrs. Eller with the information and verify you did it.
  • A friend can often send you a pdf of a worksheet or even take a picture of it and send it to you.
  • It's a great idea to have a second copy of the book you are reading for class at home.
  • If you don't have the worksheet, you can call , message, or Facetime a friend. Once you know what's on the assignment, you ARE allowed to just write the information on a regular piece of paper. The worksheet itself is not magical.
  • Check Google Classroom. You can write questions on the stream and some forms may be posted on it.
  • Come early to school the next morning to get what you need. Again, Mrs. Eller is at school at least an hour early! If you knock on the door and she doesn't answer, try the office. She may be making copies etc.

Tips for Remembering Stuff

These could prevent you from running into a problem

  • Put things where they belong RIGHT AWAY!  (Ex: as soon as you finish your homework, put it in your backpack right away instead of leaving it on your table or desk. After all, how often do you forget your backpack? On the other hand you don't ever bring your desk to school!)
  • DOOR TRICK! Place your backpack, project, library book etc. right by the door the night before so you'll basically trip over it in the morning! OR, put a post-it reminder on the door where you'll see it when you leave for school.
  • POST-ITS TRICK! Since you can put post-its basically anywhere, stick them with reminders in places you know you will look. For example, on the door, on your mirror where you brush your teeth, on the clock by your bed, and even in your shoe!
  • BACK PACK TRICK!  Do your homework with your backpack right beside you. Make sure you have it open. Now, imagine it is your "Backpack Monster" and he is very hungry.  Never leave your work on the table. If you have to run off, FIRST drop your work into the Backpack Monster's mouth.  He is saying, "Feed me! Feed me!"  Do NOT say to yourself that you will remember to put it in your backpack later.  If it makes it into your backpack, it will make it to school.  After all, how often do your forget your backpack? LOL
  • HAND TRICK! Write a reminder on your hand in ink. The cool thing about that is that you keep seeing it right in front of your face, AND you never forget your hand at home!
  • CAR/BIKE TRICK! Put stuff in your car or on your bike the night before. Don't just count on remembering it in the morning.
  • LUGGAGE TAG TRICK! Put a luggage tag on your backpack. This can be used to write notes to yourself and slip into the clear pocket. Or it can be used to keep a permanent checklist on your backpack.
  • LUNCH TRICK! Put your lunch on your stuff. You probably won't forget your lunch, right?
  • ALARM CLOCK TRICK:  Alarm clocks can remind you to do so much! You can set multiple alarms on devices like a phone, an iPad etc. And you can have it automatically repeat each week. Plus you can type a specific label for the alarm. So, for example, you could make an alarm for 5:00 on Sunday that reminds you to put math facts and signed cover sheet in your Blue Folder!  This is probably the method I use the most! If you have an Apple watch, you can set alarms throughout the day. For example, at the end of the day have an alarm that reminds you what to put in your backpack.
  • ALEXA TRICK: Do you have a home assistant like Alexa? You can tell it to remind you of things all week long. This works similarly to the Alarm Clock Trick.
  • Grow a "Check Your Agenda" habit! If you ALWAYS check your agenda each day before going home and before coming to school you will save yourself from lots of forgetting.

you are responsible for you! Not your parents!
